Mali school breaks ground thanks to you

P1020443We’re back from our trip to Mali, and the ground-breaking ceremony for a schoolhouse in a tiny village about 4 hours southeast of the capital city of Bamako.

With the help of our business partners and clients we’ve taken a portion of Courtney & Co’s income over the past year and have donated it to help build a school in a deserving village in Africa. I would like to personally thank you for your patronage. By working with Courtney & Co, you’ve helped improve education in a small part of the world. As you know, education is a major key in improving social and economic conditions for struggling communities around the globe.

smallWe would especially like to thank buildOn, the organization who made this all possible. Their global network of passionate and hands-on individuals has built over 350 schools in developing nations like Haiti, Nicaragua, Nepal, Malawi and Mali. buildOn has been awarded the highest ranking 5 years running by Charity Navigator, who awards groups that have the highest percentage of donations going towards programs.

2. We have experts who enrich and ensure quality discussions

3. Will produce a book of the leading topics of discussion.  For you. By you.

Mission: Together, we’ll build a manual of the best thinking in marketing and branding today… all accessible to small business leaders like us. It’s easy. It’s time to start the discussion we’ve all been wanting to have.

Join the conversation!

Courtney guesses the price of her pants

jc_pennyI’m immune to marketing and promotions right? Every day I exit Penn Station and get bombarded with offers of of FREE newspapers, samples of breath mints, a coupon for a health club, FREE this, sample that. Never once do I stop. I’m a New Yorker and smarter than that. But, for some reason the JC Penney display caught my eye. Could it be a distant memory of following my Mom through a JC Penney in upstate New York when I was a young boy. Or, maybe it was curiosity. How could models stand behind cellophane without sweating or losing their dignity in 80 degree weather in front of one of the world’s busiest transportation hubs.

Never shying away from a challenge, I accepted the advances of the clipboard carrying JC Penney representative to guess what the cost was for the man’s tie and women’s pants. Funny, I missed the tie by about $15 bucks, and guessed the women’s pants within $1 dollar. Lets not read into that too much.  5 minutes I will never get back for a red JC Penney bag with lip gloss and a women’s fitted t-shirt .  I guess I’m not JC Penney’s target audience?

Designing for the greater good

greater-goodCourtney & Co is proud to announce that two projects have been showcased in a design book published by HarperCollins. The book will be called “Designing for the Greater Good”, and will showcase the best design work for non-profit and cause-related marketing produced in the last five years.

Designing for the Greater Good by Peleg Top and Jonathan Cleveland will be in stores in early 2010. It will be distributed around the world and published by HarperCollins Publishers.

“We are excited to be a part of something bringing light to the socially-responsible design that’s going on right now. This work has been rewarding for us as a company and we are thrilled its being recognized.” Mark Courtney, President and Executive Creative Director

The brand refresh for Classroom, Inc. will be featured as a case study in the book. This means a one or two page spread will be devoted to the work also showing the story behind the design. Classroom, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving reading and math skills for middle and high school students by developing engaging computer simulations for students and training and support for teachers. Their goal is to help ensure that whatever social and economic obstacles young people face, they all have a chance to succeed.

The invitation package and poster designs for the 2007 Do The Wright Thing Gala were also selected for inclusion in the book. The Gala celebration is an annual fundraiser for “The David Wright Foundation”, a charitable organization focused on giving back to children’s causes that was founded by the third baseman of the New York Mets.

Courtney & Co Hosts Sustainability Event

DrLaura_SappiThe featured speaker for the evening was Dr. Laura Thompson, PhD and Director, Sustainability & Technical Marketing from Sappi Fine Paper. Her multimedia presentation was informative and educational. Designers leaving the event felt better equipped to make recommendations to their clients about important topics like forest management, recycled vs. virgin, wind power printing, environmental issues, and sustainability when producing corporate communications. Calin Shope, from The Hennegan Company, rounded out the presentation, adding valuable perspective from the print production side, giving designers a complete understanding of all aspects of sustainability.
